Diabetes Education Awareness & Prevention (DEAP)
In 2007-08 PVAMU/CEP adopted a six-lesson curriculum called DEAP (Diabetes Education Awareness and Prevention) to be implemented to at least 100 Dallas county residents for each funding cycle, specifically African-Americans, Hispanics, elderly, and other limited resource audiences.
The program covered topics such as: Understanding Diabetes; Controlling Diabetes Through Nutrition; Get Up & Move (Physical Activity); Medication Management; Monitoring Your body; and Complications of Diabetes
To date, Dallas County Extension Agent has implemented the DEAP diabetes program to more than 150 adult residents in six locations throughout Dallas County. DEAP has successfully utilized local healthcare professionals and volunteers; conducted supplemental physical activities and healthy diabetic food demonstrations; initiated walking programs with pedometers; provided more than 32,000 handouts, newsletters, and flyers.
Additional programming includes:
· Organ Wise Guys, a comprehensive nutrition and physical activity program that addresses childhood overweight and obesity to approximately 1000 Dallas County students;
· Emergency Preparedness – EDEN …. When disasters occur, it’s too late to do the things that could help your family cope more easily. Get ready now — and you will be prepared when the unexpected happens. This program will help you to, “Get Prepared, and Get Involved”, by assisting you and your family with developing strategies, plans, disaster supply kits, medical supply kits and much more.
