Diabetes Education Awareness & Prevention (DEAP)

In 2007-08 PVAMU/CEP adopted a six-lesson curriculum called DEAP (Diabetes Education Awareness and Prevention) to be implemented to at least 100 Dallas county residents for each funding cycle, specifically African-Americans, Hispanics, elderly, and other limited resource audiences.

The program covered topics such as: Understanding Diabetes; Controlling Diabetes Through Nutrition; Get Up & Move (Physical Activity); Medication Management; Monitoring Your body; and Complications of Diabetes

To date, Dallas County Extension Agent has implemented the DEAP diabetes program to hundreds of families throughout the county in various partnering agencies that include Dallas Can Academies and Hope Christian Womens Job Corp.  DEAP has successfully utilized local healthcare professionals and volunteers; conducted supplemental physical activities and healthy food demonstrations; initiated walking programs with pedometers; provided more than 50,000 handouts, newsletters, and flyers.

Additional programming includes:

Preparing for the Unexpected

If a disaster occurs in your community, local government and disaster organizations will try to help you.  But you need to be ready as well.  Although we cannot prevent disasters, we can reduce the risk of injury and even death by becoming informed.

A first step for disaster preparedness is to learn about what could happen and how to respond.

This presentation is designed to help residents of Texas “Get Informed, Get Prepared, Get Involved” with a focus on, but not limited to the following:

  • Emergency and non-emergency phone numbers in Texas;
  • Websites;
  • Making a family plan;
  • Creating a family disaster supplies kit;
  • Evacuation Food Safety and more

Parenting Matters

Parenting Matters is a curriculum designed for use with parents mandated by the court to participate in parenting training and parents who are referred by the Department of Social Services or other agencies.  Parents may be referred for various reasons, ranging from custody issues to issues related to child abuse or neglect. Parents have also attended this program to enhance their personal parenting skills.

It is an eight-week session curriculum designed to be easily implemented by parent educators.  The goal is to help parents gain the knowledge and skills needed to enhance their parenting skills while becoming a positive influence in their children’s lives.
